Mini-split acting up? That’s fixable
Blinking lights, a head that drips, a zone that won’t cool: mini-splits fail in their own particular ways, and repairing them right takes a tech who actually knows the platform.
The straight version
Mini-splits are reliable machines, but when they act up, plenty of general HVAC outfits just shrug and quote a replacement. The systems speak in blink codes, their electronics are less forgiving than a contactor-and-capacitor condenser, and the refrigerant circuits are small enough that a minor leak matters. None of that makes them unrepairable. It makes them a job for someone who’s worked on them.
Common calls we see: a head blinking an error code and refusing to run, water dripping from the indoor unit because the condensate line clogged or the pump quit, ice on the coil, a zone that cools while another won’t, remotes that stopped talking to the head, and units that lost capacity after a slow leak. Each of those has a specific cause, and finding it beats swapping parts on a hunch.
Timing matters more in this trade than most people expect. Spring is the honest window for cooling work, before the first triple-digit week exposes every marginal capacitor and low charge in the county at once. Fall belongs to heat: combustion checks, heat exchanger inspections, and the repairs that are cheap in October and miserable in January. If the calendar lets you choose, choose the shoulder season, and if it does not, the emergency line answers either way.

My mini-split is blinking and won’t run. What does that mean?
The blink pattern is an error code, and it’s the starting clue, not the whole answer. The code points at a circuit and we test from there. Bring the model number when you call and we can often narrow it down before we arrive.
Why is my indoor unit dripping water?
Usually a clogged condensate drain or a failed condensate pump, occasionally a frozen coil melting off. It’s one of the most common and most fixable mini-split calls we get. Don’t ignore it, the drip is directly over your wall and floor.
One zone won’t cool but the others work. Is the whole system failing?
Probably not. Zone-specific faults usually trace to that head’s electronic expansion valve, sensor, or board rather than the shared outdoor unit. That’s a targeted repair, not a system replacement.
Can a mini-split refrigerant leak be fixed?
Often yes, especially at flare connections, which are the usual culprit. We find the leak, repair or remake the joint, and weigh the charge back in to spec rather than topping off blind.
