Calibration: when 72 needs to actually mean 72
A thermostat that reads three degrees off makes every day less comfortable and every bill a little higher. Calibration is a small service that fixes a surprisingly annoying problem.
The straight version
Set the stat to 72 and the house feels like 75. Or the bedroom is fine but the hallway where the stat lives runs cold, so the system overshoots everywhere else. Miscalibration and bad placement produce the same complaint: the number on the wall and the comfort in the room don’t match. People live with it for years, nudging the setpoint and paying for the overshoot.
A calibration visit measures the stat against reference instruments, corrects the offset where the model allows it, and evaluates the location itself: sun exposure, drafts, interior walls versus exterior, height, and proximity to supply registers all skew readings. Sometimes the fix is an offset adjustment. Sometimes it’s relocating the stat or adding a remote sensor in the room that actually matters. Either way the number starts telling the truth.
A word on urgency, since half these calls start with it: describe the symptoms on the phone and you will get an honest read on whether this is a tonight problem or a this-week problem. Households with babies, elderly family, or medical equipment go to the front of the line. Everything else gets a real window, not a four-hour maybe, and after-hours terms get stated plainly before a truck ever rolls.

How much can a thermostat actually be off?
Two to four degrees is common on aging stats, and placement can add more. Four degrees of error in a Texas summer is real money and real discomfort, every single day.
Can all thermostats be calibrated?
Most digital models accept an offset adjustment, older mechanical ones sometimes physically adjust, and some cheap units simply can’t be corrected. If yours can’t, we’ll say so, and a replacement stat is an inexpensive cure.
Why does the room with the thermostat feel different from the rest of the house?
Because the stat only knows one room, and the system serves them all. If the stat’s room runs warm or cold relative to the house, everything else overshoots. Remote sensors or relocation fix the mismatch at the source.
Will calibration lower my energy bill?
If you’ve been compensating for a false reading by setting the stat lower in summer or higher in winter, yes, correcting it recovers that waste. Each degree of summer setpoint is roughly six to eight percent of cooling cost.
