Compressor repair and the honest conversation around it
The compressor is the heart of the system and the most condemned part in HVAC. Half the “dead compressors” we’re called about turn out to be something cheaper. We test before anyone talks money.
The straight version
No two words empty a homeowner’s wallet faster than “compressor’s gone.” It’s the most expensive common component in the system, and that price tag makes it a favorite diagnosis for outfits paid on the ticket. Here’s what those diagnoses often actually are: a failed run capacitor, a pitted contactor, a hard-start problem, burnt wiring at the terminals, or a unit so starved by a dirty coil that it trips on internal overload and gets called dead. Every one of those is a fraction of a compressor’s cost.
Real compressor testing takes minutes with a meter and honesty: winding resistance checked against spec, megohm readings for grounded windings, amp draws under load. If it tests dead, you’ll see the readings that say so, and then the real conversation starts, because replacing a compressor only makes sense when the rest of the system justifies it. Warranty status matters enormously here, and we check yours before quoting anything, because a compressor still under manufacturer warranty changes the math completely.
North Texas is hard on equipment in both directions: cooling seasons that run April to October with attics past 140 degrees, then winter fronts that drop thirty degrees in an afternoon. Every recommendation on this page is made against that reality, sizing, maintenance intervals, and the repair-or-replace math included. Equipment that gets honest seasonal attention handles it; neglected equipment picks the worst week of the year to quit.

How we approach it
A compressor replacement without a root-cause answer is a countdown to the next one, so ours includes the why: acid test on the oil, metering device check, airflow verification. If the system doesn’t justify the surgery, you’ll hear that plainly with numbers, not a nudge toward the showroom.
Cooling work in this metro is its own discipline. Systems here run five thousand hours in a bad summer, condensers sit in full sun against radiant brick, and the difference between a unit that limps to August and one that cruises through it is usually maintenance history plus an install that was commissioned with instruments instead of assumptions. Whatever brought you to this page, the fix starts with measurements: pressures, temperatures, static, amperage. The guesswork model is what the sales-desk companies sell.
Financing through Synchrony and Wisetek is there when the timing is hard, and the emergency line reaches a real person 24/7. Serving Midlothian and the four-county southern DFW footprint: Ellis, Johnson, Dallas, and Tarrant counties. See finished work in the gallery.
How the call goes
- Describe the symptoms on the phone. Half the time you’ll get a preliminary read before the truck ever rolls.
- On site, the diagnosis comes from gauges and meters, not hunches, and you see the failed part rather than hear about it.
- The price is firm before work begins. After-hours emergency terms get stated plainly up front.
- When the job wraps, the system gets verified under load and you get the findings in plain language.
A note on parts and warranties: repairs use parts matched to the manufacturer’s specification, not whatever is cheapest on the shelf, and the paperwork you get names what went in. Where the equipment is still under a manufacturer’s parts warranty, we tell you, because plenty of homeowners pay full freight for parts their registration already covers. That one sentence has saved 2L customers real money over the years, and it is exactly the kind of thing a commissioned salesman is paid to forget to mention.

How do I know if my compressor is actually dead?
You don’t take anyone’s word for it, including ours, you look at readings. Winding resistance, megohm-to-ground, and amp draw tell the story in a few minutes. A shocking number of condemned compressors are really thirty-dollar capacitors, so the test matters.
Is my compressor under warranty?
Quite possibly. Most manufacturers cover compressors for ten years from installation if the unit was registered, and sometimes five even if it wasn’t. We look up your serial number before quoting, because warranty coverage turns a big job into a labor-only job.
What kills compressors early?
Almost always something upstream: chronic low refrigerant from a leak, flooding from a failed metering device, voltage problems, or years of running starved behind a dirty coil. That’s why our replacements include finding the killer, otherwise the new one inherits the same fate.
Is it worth replacing the compressor or should I replace the whole unit?
Depends on age, warranty, and the system’s history. A warranty compressor in an eight-year-old system is usually an easy yes. Paying full freight to put a new heart in a fifteen-year-old body usually isn’t. You’ll get both numbers laid out straight.
What’s a hard-start kit and do I need one?
A capacitor-relay assist that helps a struggling compressor start, useful for long line sets and aging units showing hard-start symptoms. It’s a legitimate sixty-dollar tool in the right situation and a Band-Aid in the wrong one. We’ll tell you which yours is.
