The straight version

How do I know if my house is under-ventilated?
Stale smell when you walk in, lingering cooking odors, condensation on windows, morning stuffiness in bedrooms, and general February closed-house malaise. Tight newer homes and remodeled older ones are the usual suspects.
What is an ERV and is it worth it here?
An energy-recovery ventilator swaps indoor stale air for outdoor fresh air while transferring heat and moisture between the streams, so fresh air arrives partly pre-conditioned. In a climate this hot and humid, ERVs are the right recovery technology, and in tight homes they’re genuinely worth it.
Can’t I just crack windows?
In the six weeks a year Texas weather permits, sure. The other months, an open window costs serious conditioning money and lets in unfiltered pollen and dust. Controlled ventilation gives you the freshness without those bills.
Will more ventilation raise my energy costs?
Some, honestly, fresh air has to be conditioned. Recovery ventilation keeps most of that energy, and correct sizing keeps flows to what the house needs. The comfort and health return is what justifies the modest cost.
My bathroom fan seems useless. Is that a ventilation problem?
Almost certainly, and it’s common: builder-grade fans on crushed or overlong flex duct move a fraction of their rating. Fixing exhaust paths is unglamorous work that stops mirror fog, paint peel, and the humidity those failures feed into the house.
