When the thermostat is the problem, not the system
Blank screens, wrong readings, a system that ignores its own settings: sometimes the fault is the small box on the wall, and knowing when saves you from paying for repairs the system doesn’t need.
The straight version
A surprising share of no-cool and no-heat calls end at the thermostat: dead batteries, a corroded wire at the terminal, a failed relay inside the stat, or a unit reading four degrees wrong and making the whole system look broken. The skill is in telling thermostat problems from system problems quickly, because they masquerade as each other constantly.
We test the stat the way it deserves: verify what it’s calling for at the terminals, jumper the circuit to prove the equipment responds, check the sensor against a reference thermometer, and inspect the low-voltage wiring run for the breaks and shorts that happen inside walls. If the thermostat is the fault, repair or replacement is quick and honest. If it isn’t, you’ve just saved a guess.
Timing matters more in this trade than most people expect. Spring is the honest window for cooling work, before the first triple-digit week exposes every marginal capacitor and low charge in the county at once. Fall belongs to heat: combustion checks, heat exchanger inspections, and the repairs that are cheap in October and miserable in January. How do I know if it’s the thermostat or the AC that’s broken?
You mostly can’t from the couch, and that’s fine, it’s our job. A two-minute jumper test at the stat tells us whether the equipment responds when called correctly. That one test routes the whole repair the right direction.
My thermostat screen is blank. Is it dead?
Maybe just batteries, maybe a tripped float switch cutting power to the circuit, maybe a blown low-voltage fuse at the board. Check batteries first. If that’s not it, the fault is findable and usually inexpensive.
The temperature reading seems wrong. Can that be fixed?
Yes. Some stats calibrate, and placement matters too: a stat in sunlight or over a lamp reads high all afternoon. We calibrate or relocate as the situation deserves, and thermostat calibration is its own service we offer.
Why does my system turn on and off constantly?
If the cycling is driven from the wall, it’s often a failing stat relay or a placement problem. If it’s the equipment itself, that’s a different diagnosis. We determine which before anything gets replaced.
Is it worth repairing an old dial thermostat?
Rarely, and some old ones contain mercury and deserve proper disposal anyway. A modern replacement costs little, runs more accurately, and opens the door to schedules that actually save money.
